FAQs

Maternity Photography

Q. What should I wear to my Maternity Photography Session?
A. I have some lovely maternity gowns so you can just come to the studio in your normal clothes if you like. If you have something that you would really like to wear that is fine too, just let me know and I will make sure that my backgrounds and lighting work for what you have in mind.

Q. What underwear should I wear?
A. If possible try not to wear a bra on the day of the shoot or anything tight so as to avoid marks and dints in the skin

Q. Can my husband come to the session?
A. Yes of course, we would love him to come?

Q. Can my other children come to the session?
A. Yes!

Q. My children are only little what should they wear?
A. Generally I advise that little boys wear jeans, bare feet and nothing on top up to age around 8 or 9. Above that age I suggest jeans and a white/cream shirt/t shirt. I suggest little girls wear plain strappy white/cream summer dresses. We want to focus on their faces, expressions and the family relationships.

Q. When can I have my Maternity Portrait Session?
A. I usually do Maternity Portrait Sessions during the week at 4pm, sometimes earlier if I haven’t had a newborn session. I can sometimes do Maternity sessions on Saturdays too.

Q. How long will my Maternity Photography Session take?
A. Your session will take 1.5 hours.

Q. Can I bring items with sentimental value to the session?
A. Yes absolutely, teddy bears, uniforms (police/fire/army etc.), rugby balls, guitar – you are welcome to bring anything that you feel represents your family.

Q. How do we get to see the photographs?
A. At the end of the session I will book you in for a viewing. That will generally take place a week after the session when you will see a lovely slideshow of the partially edited images and then we’ll go through them one by one and you can choose your favourites and place your order. Your order will then be fully edited and will be sent through to our lab and our framers depending what you have ordered. Your order will normally take up to 6 weeks.

Newborn Photography

Q. What should we bring to our Newborn Photography Session?
A. Plenty of milk, wipes, changing mat, baby’s blanket, snacks for you (or there is a sandwich shop across the road), change of clothes for baby (in case disaster strikes). Wear layers as the Newborn Studio is very warm to keep baby comfortable but parents (and photographer!) may find it a little hot! I would appreciate it if you could bring a pacifier even if you don’t intend to use one normally, baby will not become attached to it after one session and it can help them to settle.

Q. Do we need to bring props or outfits?
A. I have lots and lots of hats, headbands, wraps, blankets in every imaginable colour. I also have baskets, suitcases, scales, a sledge and more.

Q. How soon after baby is born do we bring them to the studio and how do we book them in?
A. I usually book baby in the diary for 7 days after the due date and then adjust the date when they’re born. I only book 3 Newborns in per week so I can juggle the dates around. Newborn sessions are on weekdays.

Q. What time will our Newborn Photography Session start?
A. I like to start the session at 11 am which I think gives new parents enough time to get ready and get out of the house!

Q. How long will our Newborn Photography Session take?
A. Your session will take anywhere between 2 and 4 hours. It is entirely baby led. Some babies fall asleep immediately, others take a lot longer. Sometimes we may not take a shot for over an hour as baby settles into the session. I am very, very patient and it is a very chilled out session.

Q. Should we feed our Newborn before the session?
A. If Baby wants to be fed, feed Baby!

Q. I’m breastfeeding, is there anything I need to know?
A. If you’re breast feeding please avoid:
– Acidic foods such as lemons, oranges, berries, pizza, spaghetti, chilli and tomato products
– Gassy vegetables such as asparagus, onions, broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower
– Fizzy drinks, coffee
– Anything mega spicy

Q. Can we bring items with sentimental value to the session?
A. Yes absolutely, teddy bears, uniforms (police/fire/army etc.), rugby balls, guitar – you are welcome to bring anything that you feel represents your family.

Q. What should we dress our Newborn in for the session?
A. Please dress Baby in a zip up or press stud onesie/sleeper suit, nothing over the head then if baby is asleep at the start we can get going without waking them up.

Q. Can we be photographed with our Newborn?
A. I am always happy to do shots of newborns with their parents, in fact I encourage it as I believe it’s important to exist in photographs for your children. If you’re happy to be in a couple of images can you bring a plain white v neck top/shirt and dark trousers for Dad and a white/cream/neutral top for Mum (preferably sleeveless/strappy so I can do skin to skin shots however I understand if you would rather have sleeves).

Q. Can our other children be in the photographs?
A. Yes definitely. It is best to bring them in at the start or towards the end of the session as it is too warm and boring for children especially toddlers and they can get grumpy!

Q. What should they wear?
A. Generally I advise that little boys wear jeans, bare feet and nothing on top up to age around 8 or 9. Above that age I suggest jeans and a white/cream shirt/t shirt. I suggest little girls wear plain strappy white/cream summer dresses. We want to focus on their faces, expressions and the new sibling relationship so it’s best if clothes don’t detract.

Q. What if Baby poos on you?
A. Finally and most importantly newborns wee and poo and throw up on my props and blankets, it’s normal, I expect it, it’s a bonus when it doesn’t happen so relax if it does!

Family Photography

Q. What should we wear to our Family Photography Session?
A. It is best if your family wear complementary colours so if you would like a neutral background and theme to your shoot then I suggest white, cream, neutral clothes with maybe chinos or jeans. If you would like a Noir shoot with a black background then black tops and trousers. For a Noir shoot please wear v necks rather than round as the floating head look is not a good one!

A. Whoever you like, parents, grandparents. I can photograph several generations and several families in the same session. We will have a chat beforehand and discuss who will be in the session.
